What Makes a Kick Ass Heroine? by Vivi Anna

What Makes a Kick Ass Heroine?

Most of the time when people talk about ‘kick-ass’ characters, they are talking in the literal sense. A character that can physically kick someone’s ass.  So we think that character must be physically strong, maybe can do some martial arts, can handle a gun and a knife, can take a beating and still punch the crap out of someone. But I also think that ‘kick-ass’ characters have other qualities.
1.       Fierce loyalty
2.       Intelligence
3.       Strong character
4.       Courage
5.       Self-effacing

In my book Vanquished, Kat is all these things plus can physically beat the crap out of someone, and handle a gun and knife, wears leather and drives a motorcycle.  She’s also physically scarred and is flawed in many ways. She makes mistakes, but she learns from them. And although she’s got a lot of pride, she does know when to ask for help, albeit reluctantly.

She is definitely one of my most favorite characters I’ve created and she’s been with me for a long time.   And I plan to write more adventures for her.  You can find her next up in INFERNO, coming December 1, 2012.
